About
![]()
I am a writer, and teach creative writing and literature at Indiana University East, in Richmond, Indiana. Most of what I write is creative nonfiction — or, as my students like to say, engaging writing about the real world. I’m interested currently in the Midwest, where I live: the habits of life here, mores, idioms, ways of thinking, fads, and more. Here, the current and future fate of what many like to call “the rust belt” is something I am drawn to again and again. In this place where factories once provided a robust way of life, we are now struggling — to find and create jobs, stem the brain drain, make our lives richer culturally, economically, socially, and even spirtually. There are a lot of stories attached to these endeavors. Some of those will appear here.
I’m also an eager if not talented horseback rider, a dog lover, tolerant of cats, and mystified by birds.
