
Jean Harper is a writer in the Midwest. Her books include the prize winning memoirs Rose City: A Memoir of Work, and Still Life With Horses. She wrote and directed the documentary film 1:47.
Her essays and poetry have appeared in The Iowa Review, The Florida Review, North American Review, Harpur Palate, Bacopa Literary Review, Black Fox Literary Review, Poemeleon, and elsewhere. Her writing has also been included as a “Notable Essay” in Best American Essays 2013.
She has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Indiana Arts Commission; she has been a Scholar in Residence at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, and been in residence at Yaddo, MacDowell, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. For many years she taught writing and literature at Indiana University East, and now in blissful retirement, she lives and works on a small farm with her husband, many dogs, horses, cats, chickens, two adolescent goats, and an annual onslaught of bluebirds.
